Big Moan Energy. Liu Lee [Lick] EP

Seoul based Musician Liu Lee, uses straightforward language in her productions, borrowing elements of electroclash and breakbeat, and reinterpreting 90s club and dance music structures. Liu Lee's new 5-track EP, [Lick] strengthens her signature soundscape from her 1st EP [Jasmine] through Trip-hop-infused instrumentals woven with diverse vocal techniques, while strengthening the storyline aspect of her previous project.

<Bolero (Intro)>, a track nodding its head towards the classic ‘All My Love' by Patti Page,
greets listeners with her set tone, while <LICK> pushes electroclash and her exposition of ‘trip’. After a brief ventilation with the trippy, dim-lit flavor of [Lick] delicately seeping through R&B infused vocals of <Excuse Me>, <Forehead>, featuring Jibin from Y2K92, clashes the two vocal elements, thesis(正) and antithesis(反) deriving into a synthesis(合). Liu Lee finishes off with <Candy Explosion>, a climatic finale using hard hitting Drum & Bass rhythms, wrapping the entire EP together with distorted plucks, gnarly raw vocals.

While [Lick]’s club scene inspired, intricate elec-trip-hop transcribing the late-y2k mood, might seem like all the tracks are rooted in different musical inspirations, throughout the EP Liu Lee draws the listener to the main concept of this EP, ‘trip’ and ‘rave’. Safe to say, this EP could be described in one sentence as ‘Big Moan Energy”, reminiscing that feeling of listening to music on a dimly lit, sweaty surrounding.

Moaning as a word might sound sexual, but the inner context speaks about unexpected encounter of emotions and situations. Peeling, or foiling different layers of [Lick] and discovering dimensions of translating the EP challenges the listener to feel intrigued or challenged. Somewhere in Liu Lee’s production sees her love and war of electronic music lingering around, like an instinct. And when [Lick] is played through the soundsystem you will feel a tingle, or even a big wave of bodily experience, staining deep inside.
